Revelations 3:20-21, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”
The fact that the Lord will come to us and knock on the door of our heart is certain. He may come, however, at a time that is not convenient for us. Nevertheless, He expects a prompt, unquestioning response from us.
The word “If” in the above verse tells us that the Lord’s coming into the room of our spiritual life is conditional. It indicates that we have been given the option either to ignore His approaches, or to invite Him to come within. Our prompt obedience in response to His knocking, even when it takes place at a time that is inconvenient, will bring us, together with Him, through the door of entrance into His manifest presence.
Proverbs 8:17, “I love them that love Me; and those that seek Me early [respond promptly] shall find Me.”
This passage also expresses a condition. It indicates to us that only certain ones, “those that seek Me early” will receive the desired result.
The Lord will share Himself with those who respond promptly to His “knocking”. His approach to us may come in any one of many different forms or ways. Our ability to hear and rightly respond to His “knocking” can be cultivated. It is both possible and highly desirable that, as we satisfy the demands of our pattern of daily living, we learn to continually listen, should the Lord, desiring our fellowship, come and knock upon our heart’s door.
Psalms 25:14-15, “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant. My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.”
Our Lord is seeking out those who will respond promptly to His knock on the door of their heart. He is searching for a bride who is willing to respond to His presence whenever He may choose to come. As she invites Him to enter the room of her spiritual life, He will reciprocate by sharing with her His burden concerning the vineyard.
